FARM POLLUTION INSURANCE

FILL IN THE GAPS
WITH A FARM POLLUTION INSURANCE POLICY

If you own a farm, chances are an accident involving some sort of risk to the environment could arise. But, not all pollution incidents are covered under vehicle and farm insurance policies. You could be at risk for having to pay for damages out-of-pocket – whether it's an overturned truck of milk that runs into a stream, or a chemical barn fire. An Environmental Insurance policy from Farm & Country Insurance can close these and other gaps in your coverage. One of our agents will examine your current farm insurance policy and determine if an Environmental Insurance policy is right for your farm's needs. Below you'll find a few examples of pollution incidents that you could encounter that may not be covered sufficiently by your farm insurance. To learn more, click the link to read our BLOG article.

Who Will Pay for Spill Cleanup?

The farm auto policy covers pollution cleanup costs resulting from an accident, but only of an injury to a 3rd party or property damage occurs. So, if you overturn a truck of milk, manure, or chemicals into a stream or field, you may have to pay cleanup costs out of pocket.

Who Will Pay if Your Hauler Takes a Spill?

If you hire a 3rd party to haul milk, manure, or other pollutants for you that you still own, you can be held liable because the pollutant is owned by you. There is no coverage on a farm insurance policy that extends to a 3rd party hauler, but an Environmental Insurance policy covers your liability in the event of a claim made against you.

Chemical Barn Fire Protection

If you have a fire in your chemical storage barn, the DEC or other agency will most likely be notified and will monitor cleanup. Does your farm insurance pay for this cleanup? The answer is: some. Farm insurance companies have a ‘sublimit’ for this cleanup and it’s very possible that it won’t be enough to cover an expensive testing/remediation project. An Environmental Insurance policy would cover the rest of the cleanup costs for you. Give us a call to find out how we can help you sleep better at night knowing you're covered for these types of incidents.
